A Thornton cattle breeder is making the transition to Angus after 50 years of breeding Hereford cattle.

Stuart Gilmore said he was making the transition to meet the current market demand for black cattle.

"It's a little bit sad, but what do you do?" he said.

"That's the way the market has gone now. We're not big on black cattle, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with the Herefords, but it's what people want to buy."

Mr Gilmore will put forward 90 head of 10-11-month-old mixed-sex Hereford and red baldy weaner cattle at the Nutrien Yea weaner sale in January.
