A special spring-drop weaner sale at Yea on Friday saw heavier steers lift 30-40 cents a kilogram compared to the saleyard's last store sale.

Nutrien agents yarded just over 2900 calves, attracting strong interest from local buyers and agents from as far afield as Casterton, Geelong and South Gippsland, with the sale grossing more than $4.22 million.

Nutrien auctioneer Austin Gerhardy said the quality of the cattle was very good "right the way through", but the weight dropped off once the sale moved past the first lane.

Mr Gerhardy said the larger, well-presented lines of heavier steers weighing 320-370kg were "certainly" dearer than they had been, up 30-40c/kg, with buyers chasing volume.
