Victorian restockers step into the market at Yea with tentative confidence

Tracy and Jack, 12, Stirling, Avenel, sold a pen of 12 heavy Hereford steers for Stirling Agriculture at Yea. The cattle were sold due to seasonal conditions and would normally be finished and sold direct to the processors.

A reasonably large yarding of 3400 cattle showed the effects of the tough season at the Yea sale on Friday.

Heavy cattle in short supply were strong, but large runs of light calves struggled to find a market.

Nutrien auctioneer Jack Ginnane said overall, the market improved on last month's sale, quoting feeder and yearling steers 20-30 cents a kilogram dearer.

"You could put a blanket over the steers 300kg plus and they would be 20-30c/kg better," he said.

"The steers weighing 300kg and below would be fully firm to 5-10c/kg dearer, and the really little steers under 240kg were a bit easier."
