Feedlot demand for heavier steers and a step-up in competition from restockers on younger calves helped drive a dearer trend at the Yea store cattle sale last week.
There were more sales above 400c/kg and lightweights touched on 500c/kg liveweight.
Steers peaked at $2390 for Angus weighing 578kg, working out to 413c/kg as feedlot buyers from JBS Australia, Teys Charlton and Hopkins River set the dearer tone in the opening laneway.
There were multiple sales above $2000 a head, with nicely weighted Angus pens suiting grain orders at the higher end of the cents-a-kilogram rates.
