Local competition cranked up on weaner steers and breeding quality heifers at Yea today, with Angus steers hitting 670c/kg liveweight and heifers 612c/kg liveweight.

Such premium sales were only for select pens but the sale did have a robust floor in it with values for the heavier cattle matching recent sales and lighter calves quoted as dearer.

In dollars a head terms, cows and calves sold to $3450; grown bullocks to $3200; heavy feeder steers to $2500; a feature run of spring-drop Angus steers to $1890; and unjoined Angus heifers to $2390.

While all grades were represented in the yarding of 2200 cattle, there were a couple of feature lines of young Angus cattle.
