Understocked buyers returned to the Yea cattle market with renewed confidence, pushing prices for most steers higher than 440c/kg.
Store cattle attracted increased buying interest at Yea, with grown steers reaching $2460 and yearlings $1540, as buyers begin factoring in the potential for spring feed.
Nutrien livestock manager at Yea, Chris Pollard, said each sale appeared to be getting slightly dearer, with many buyers still understocked.
As at recent sales, the talking point at Yea was the drop off in numbers since the June rain, with this month’s yarding of 1500 mixed cattle one of the smallest following a spate of capacity markets across the autumn and summer during the dry conditions.
Prices were dearer than the last Yea sale four weeks ago but remained at similar price points to more recent markets such as Wodonga, with the majority of steers selling from 440c to 485c/kg liveweight with some lighter calves nearing 500c/kg at times.
