Strong buyer demand has underpinned the first weaner sale held by newly formed Victorian Livestock and Property at Yea, with steer prices pushing beyond 550c/kg despite a yarding of lighter cattle.
Agents yarded 3625 head on Wednesday, drawing buyers from as far afield as northern NSW. The offering included 2241 steers, which topped at $2360 and averaged $1670, and 1384 heifers that reached $1970 and averaged $1353.
VLP livestock agent Jamie Quinlan said the agents were “very happy” with the results, as most steers weighing 250-300kg returned between $1500 and $1800 a head.
Steers weighing 360-420kg fetched 520-560c/kg while 280-350kg pens made 520-650c/kg. The top-penned heifers fetched 500c/kg while those weighing 280-300kg sold for 450-470c/kg and 250kg types 400-440c/kg.
