There was a "solid" market for cattle at the Yea store sale on Friday, despite no major feedlot competition.

Local central and northern Victorian competition stepped up in the feedlotter absence and drove up prices.

Nutrien and Elders agents yarded approximately 1500 mixed-breed cattle, the majority of which were lighter stock, reflective of winter conditions.

Elders agent Ryan Sargeant, Yea, said despite this, the market was "very strong".

"It was probably one of our first yardings for a while with significantly reduced numbers, but go back two, three years ago, this is probably a traditional winter yarding," he said.
