Young cattle prices have nudged 500 cents a kilogram as a mix of feedlotters, backgrounders and bullock fatteners dominated the buyers' rails at Yea's monthly store cattle sale.
Agents yarded 3200 cattle at Yea Saleyards on Thursday where the best of feeder-weight cattle sold to 430-440c/kg, and young steers to 480-490c/kg.
Elders livestock agent Will Phillips, Yea, said the buying gallery showed confidence with the early signs of spring, despite cattle generally lacking condition due to the winter conditions.
We were able to fit all the cattle in and there was still some really good-quality cattle in the feeder steers and heifers, but once you got off the top lines, you saw the effects of winter in the cattle," he said.
