Yea & District Memorial Hospital are continuing the MouthMap Oral Cancer Screening project, which is being undertaken by YDMH hospital staff alongside researchers from the The University of Melbourne researchers.
What is Mouthmap?
MouthMap uses high-quality medical photography to take detailed images of a person's mouth. These images are then reviewed by specialist doctors, allowing expert advice without the need to travel long distances.
Why does it matter?
Oral cancer cases are gradually increasing across Australia. Early detection is important and can lead to better treatment outcomes.
What to expect
You will be provided with research ID number as your personal details will NOT be kept with the research data.
You will fill out questionnaire about general information and lifestyle relevant to oral cancer risk.
Your mouth will be photographed in detail. This will involve using a professional camera with a flash, as well as tools to help to allow the photography of your mouth.
After the mouth photography, you will complete a short survey about your satisfaction with the process
Following the above steps, your photographs will be sent to oral skin specialist (oral medicine specialist) via a secure and private software called 'MouthMap,' which was designed by oral skin specialists. Your personal information will NOT accompany the photographs.
The photographs will be looked at by specialists and an assessment made about the quality of the photos and whether this is anything of concerns on your oral skin. If there is anything of concern, you will be contacted and referred to an appropriate health service within 3 weeks. The oral photographic skin checks is not intended to replace a visit to dental health practitioners and will note provide a report about your teeth.
Health checks will be on a walk-up basis from 9am. Please bring your Medicare card.
